Hostile Fixation - Drawing the Enemys Eye - Kingsmark TTRPG

— Why Power 3 Magic Attracts the Gloom

How Mental Drain, Supreme Spellcasting, and supernatural enemies make Kingsmark’s low-magic fantasy world dangerous, mysterious, and terrifying.

In many high-fantasy tabletop RPGs, magic has become so commonplace that people scarcely react to it. Wizards throw supernatural fire across marketplaces, enchanted objects are ordinary merchandise, and miraculous abilities become routine solutions to everyday problems. The extraordinary becomes so familiar that it eventually loses much of its ability to inspire wonder, fear, or amazement.

Kingsmark approaches magic differently. Magic is genuinely supernatural, frequently mysterious, sometimes psychologically devastating, and potentially dangerous even when the Spellcasting Test succeeds. A magician might save an entire village through an extraordinary miracle, only to discover that something far more terrifying has noticed what happened.

The game’s two principal mechanics for producing these consequences are 🧠Mental Drain and 👁Hostile Fixation. Together, they help create a world where magic remains miraculous, while its use can transform an ordinary adventure into a supernatural thriller. The complete rules appear in Chapter 15 — 📜Magic System and Chapter 16 — 🪱The Gloom.

A Low-Magic World Where Miracles Still Matter

Sylva is a low-magic world, but that does not mean magical characters should rarely cast Spells. Instead, supernatural power has not replaced ordinary civilization. Farmers still cultivate fields, physicians treat injuries, soldiers fight with conventional weapons, and travelers depend upon horses, ships, and roads.

A farmer might live an entire lifetime without witnessing anything that conclusively proves magic exists. He could nevertheless believe in ghosts, demons, prophetic dreams, miraculous healings, or supernatural creatures. Believing something might exist is very different from personally confronting undeniable proof of its existence.

A physical monster is not necessarily evidence that reality’s ordinary laws have been broken. A Giant might be extraordinarily powerful, and a Dragon might be terrifying, but both remain physical creatures within Sylva’s natural world. Watching a Healer close a mortal wound in seconds, however, challenges everything an ordinary witness understands about the human body.

Kingsmark represents this distinction through four Spell Power Levels. Power 0 (Coincidental) produces subtle manifestations that might be explained through luck or ordinary circumstances. Power 1 (Lesser) creates remarkable but potentially explainable events, while Power 2 (Greater) produces manifestations that strongly challenge natural explanations. Power 3 (Supreme) represents miracles so extraordinary that anyone witnessing them may find denial nearly impossible.

Witnesses do not all respond identically. One might fall to his knees in worship, another flee in terror, and a third accuse the magician of practicing forbidden sorcery. Their religion, education, experience, culture, and personal convictions determine how they interpret what they have witnessed.

Ancient Religious Ideas Behind Miraculous Magic

Kingsmark’s treatment of miracles draws inspiration from questions explored in Jewish religious literature, the teachings attributed to Jesus, and traditions concerned with supernatural experience. These influences are valuable because they consider miracles in relation to faith, nature, responsibility, and human understanding rather than treating supernatural power as a convenient technology.

In Pirkei Avot 5:6, certain extraordinary things are described as having been prepared at the twilight of Creation. Maimonides develops the idea that miraculous events could have been incorporated into Creation’s nature from its beginning. Meanwhile, Shabbat 32a cautions against deliberately entering danger while expecting miraculous rescue.

The Gospel accounts raise another fascinating question. In Mark 6:1–6, Jesus encounters disbelief in his hometown, and the narrative reports that he performs few healings there. Matthew 13:58 likewise associates the scarcity of miracles with the community’s unbelief. These passages have received different theological interpretations, but they illustrate how belief, expectation, social relationships, and supernatural events can become intertwined.

Kingsmark does not turn these teachings into a universal religious requirement for Spellcasting. Rather, such questions helped inspire a fictional magic system in which context matters, miracles have significance, and tremendous power should never feel trivial.

🧠Mental Drain — When Magic Strains the Mind

Many contemporary occult practitioners describe grounding and centering after demanding rituals, sometimes through eating, drinking, resting, or returning their attention to ordinary physical surroundings. Whatever interpretation practitioners give these experiences, they provide an interesting creative parallel for the psychological consequences of confronting the extraordinary.

Kingsmark represents supernatural strain through 🧠Mental Drain, which threatens progressively more serious Mental Trauma as Spell Power increases.

A failed Power 0 Spell causes 🧠Shaken Mental Trauma. Power 1 threatens 🧠Impaired Mental Trauma, Power 2 threatens 🧠Unstable Mental Trauma, and Power 3 threatens 💀Broken Mental Trauma. The original Spellcasting Test determines both whether the miracle succeeds and how severely its performer suffers.

A successful Spell reduces threatened Mental Drain by one level for meeting its Target Number, plus another level for each point exceeding it. For example, a successful Power 3 Spell has TN 12, so a final result of 12 produces 🧠Unstable Trauma, 13 produces 🧠Impaired, 14 produces 🧠Shaken, and 15 or higher eliminates the Drain entirely.

The consequences can include dizziness, nausea, disorientation, disturbing perceptions, dissociation, and potentially catastrophic psychological collapse. A magician may possess enough supernatural knowledge to attempt another miracle while being mentally unfit to endure its consequences. Rest, grounding, and appropriate recovery become meaningful aspects of characterization, although simply eating a meal does not automatically erase Mental Trauma.

👁Hostile Fixation — Drawing the Enemy’s Eye

Mental Drain is only part of the danger. 👁Hostile Fixation occurs when enemies recognize the magician as a significant threat and begin responding accordingly. The supernatural world also contains enemies capable of detecting disturbances that ordinary people cannot perceive.

At Power 1 or Power 2, knowledgeable enemies who witness supernatural manifestations may recognize the magician’s capabilities and adjust their tactics. An enemy commander might order archers to concentrate upon the magician, while another opponent might flee to warn a superior. Such decisions follow ordinary intelligence and self-preservation rather than magical mind control.

Power 3 crosses a much more dangerous threshold. Within an Ordinary or Gloom-influenced Domain, a Supreme manifestation automatically attracts 👁Hostile Fixation from the 🪱Gloom, even when no mortal enemy witnesses the Spellcasting.

The magician might heal a dying companion, purify a corrupted sanctuary, or save hundreds of innocent people from destruction. Nevertheless, somewhere beyond the characters’ awareness, an evil intelligence may recognize that an extraordinarily powerful magician has revealed himself.

The Gloom does not distinguish between benevolent miracles and destructive magic when detecting these disturbances. Its agents may consider a powerful Healer, Prophetess, or Holy Knight just as threatening as a Wizard capable of devastating an army.

🌿Domains Determine the Supernatural Danger

Sylva possesses seven spiritual Domain Ratings, ranging from 🌿Edenic −3 to 🪱Abysmal +3. Their influence determines whether a Supreme manifestation automatically draws the Gloom’s attention.

🌿Blessed −1, 🌿Sacred −2, and 🌿Edenic −3 Domains prevent this automatic response. Ordinary 0, 🪱Cursed +1, 🪱Desecrated +2, and 🪱Abysmal +3 Domains provide no such protection. An Ordinary Domain is not necessarily evil; it simply lacks sufficient Tranquility to conceal the disturbance.

When 👁Hostile Fixation triggers, the Game Master introduces one appropriate Gloom Champion, creature, faction, or group that can respond from the established world. The strength of the available threat depends upon the surrounding Domains and what actually inhabits them.

Enemies do not magically teleport beside the caster. They must investigate, communicate, travel, track, or otherwise reach their target through believable circumstances. A corrupted scout might begin watching the party, while a supernatural predator could emerge from distant ruins and pursue the magician.

The rules do not impose a universal arrival time or fixed pursuit distance. Geography, available transportation, existing enemies, and the Game Master’s established campaign setting determine how the danger unfolds. Additional Power 3 manifestations do not automatically produce unrelated enemies while an existing Gloom response remains unresolved.

Bringing Supernatural Horror Into Fantasy Adventures

The greatest storytelling opportunity is that players may have absolutely no idea what has begun moving against them. A successful miracle might end a difficult battle, allowing the adventurers to celebrate, recover, and continue traveling. Meanwhile, something dangerous may already be hunting them.

This resembles the suspense found in films such as Alien and The Thing, where incomplete information makes the threat frightening long before its full nature becomes apparent. Strange noises, missing travelers, disturbed burial grounds, suspicious strangers, and evidence of something following the party can create increasing anxiety.

The Game Master should develop this suspense through the actual capabilities and behavior of the enemy rather than arbitrarily punishing the players. A clever supernatural predator might study its victims, exploit their weaknesses, or attack when the party becomes vulnerable. An intelligent servant of the Gloom might spend days gathering information before reporting to its master.

This allows Kingsmark to combine heroic fantasy with survival horror, supernatural investigation, and psychological suspense. It also gives the horrific creatures described in the Kingsmark Bestiary a narrative purpose beyond appearing in isolated combat encounters.

The goal is not to discourage magic. It is to make the decision to perform an extraordinary miracle meaningful, especially when the characters desperately need something that lesser magic cannot accomplish.

🎬Example — Something Beneath Greywatch

Deep beneath Greywatch, a wounded adventuring party confronts a monstrous creature guarding a passage to the surface. Their Wizard, Malach, realizes that ordinary weapons and lesser Spells cannot overcome the creature before his companions are killed. Despite the danger, he performs a Power 3 Supreme manifestation, destroying the monster and opening the passage.

Malach’s modified Spellcasting result is 14 against TN 12. His miracle succeeds, but he suffers 🧠Shaken Mental Trauma from Mental Drain. His hands tremble, his ears ring, and his companions help him escape into the night.

Unknown to the party, Greywatch stands within an Ordinary 0 Domain, while ancient Desecrated ruins extend beneath the surrounding hills. The Supreme manifestation has triggered 👁Hostile Fixation, drawing the attention of something that inhabits those underground passages.

The creature does not immediately appear. It begins moving toward the disturbance, following passages that have remained undisturbed for generations. By the time it reaches the chamber, the adventurers are gone.

Two nights later, a merchant traveling behind the adventurers disappears. The following morning, the party discovers unfamiliar tracks near its campsite. During the next evening’s watch, someone hears a voice speaking from the trees, repeating words that Malach whispered while casting his Spell.

The adventurers initially suspect bandits or a wandering monster. They have no reason to connect the events with the miracle performed beneath Greywatch. Even Malach, who understands something of the dangers of Supreme Magic, cannot know exactly what has begun following them.

The Game Master knows that the creature is learning their habits, identifying the magician, and preparing for a confrontation. What began as a successful battle has developed into something considerably more frightening.

The miracle saved their lives. The adventure is far from over.
